State's gas price average jumps 10 cents

Posted online
The average price of gasoline in Missouri rose 10.1 cents during the week of March 5-11 to $3.65 yesterday.

The state's gas average was 10 cents lower than the U.S. average, which rose 3.8 cents during the week, according to a GasBuddy.com news release.

The Missouri average Sunday was 34.4 cents higher than a month ago and 26.6 cents higher than the same day last year, while the national average rose 28.3 cents month-to-month and 22.4 cents year-to-year.

"With a likely peak in gasoline prices still as much as two or more months away, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has already hit the bottom of the range that we projected back in January in our 2012 gasoline price forecast, which is quite concerning," said Patrick DeHaan GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst, in the release. "While the recent pace of price increases has slowed somewhat, the spotlight will now shift to refining facilities as they start and finish maintenance - any unexpected problems arising from such may cause prices to resume a quick climb."

With the latest spike, this morning Missouri - with an average of $3.68 per gallon - moved to No. 19 on GasBuddy.com's list of the lowest gas averages by state. The Show-Me State ranked No. 11 a week ago and held the ninth spot the week before that.

As of 9:20 a.m., the lowest cost of gas in Missouri could be found for $3.38 per gallon at two filling stations in Osage Beach. The most expensive gas, $3.99 per gallon, was available at a station in Berkeley, near St. Louis.

In Springfield, the least expensive gas was selling for $3.55 per gallon at Sam's Club, 745 W. El Camino Alto Drive. Two stations, Conoco, 700 N. Benton Ave., and Sam's Club, 3660 E. Sunshine St., were selling gas for $3.57 per gallon, while several stations priced gas at $3.59 per gallon, according to MissouriGasPrices.com.

Chicago-based Gas Buddy Organization Inc. operates a system of more than 250 price-tracking Web sites under GasBuddy.com.

As of 9:25 a.m., West Texas Intermediate crude oil was trading at $105.70 per barrel, down from $106.76 a week ago. Light sweet crude oil futures for April were trading at $105.75 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, according to the CME Group.
