The state unemployment rate rose four-tenths of a point to 5.4 percent, on a seasonally adjusted basis, caused partly by temporary layoffs in the automobile industry and a drop in manufacturing employment.
Unemployment insurance claims were up slightly in October, by 2.8 percent, or 1,000 claims.
Job losses were seen in most sectors in October.
Manufacturing employment fell by 2,100 jobs, and trade, transportation and utilities employment lost 2,900 jobs.
Professional and business services decreased by 1,800 jobs; private education and health services jobs dropped by 1,600; and government employment was down by 1,700 jobs.
Total seasonally adjusted payroll in October was 2.75 million jobs.
In the past year, Missouri has added 14,300 jobs, with gains in trade, transportation and utilities; health care and social assistance; government; and manufacturing.
