State unemployment hits 17-year high in August

Missouri’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August climbed to its highest point in 17 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate was 6.6 percent last month, up from 6.4 percent in July and up from 5.2 percent in August 2007.

The national unemployment rate in August rose to 6.1 percent, up 1.4 percentage points from August 2007. The bureau reports that 44 states saw increases in unemployment in August.

Missouri reports that government employment grew by 5,300 jobs last month, due mostly to schools opening for the fall semester, while manufacturing employment lost 3,700 jobs, according to a news release.
