State treasurer reports record month for property returns

Posted online
The unclaimed property division of Missouri State Treasurer Sarah Steelman’s office returned more than $3.3 million in unclaimed property and funds in August. That amount is the largest returned in a single month.

“This is money going back to working families in Missouri,” Steelman said in a news release.

Steelman’s office is responsible for receiving unclaimed property and returning it to its rightful owners. Unclaimed property can come from insurance policies, stocks, checks, tax refunds, safe-deposit boxes and checking accounts. The state now holds approximately $450 million in unclaimed funds or property, and 14 employees in the unclaimed property division work to locate owners or heirs.

Missourians who want to find out whether the state is holding any unclaimed property belonging to them can search www.showmethemoney.com by county, name or Social Security number.[[In-content Ad]]
