State returns $35 million in unclaimed property funds

Posted online
The state treasurer's office announced July 7 in a news release its administration returned $35 million in unclaimed property money to 92,000 account holders during fiscal year 2010.

Unclaimed property funds typically are returned to the owners of the property if possible.

“We have put $35 million back into the pockets of Missourians at a critical time,” Treasurer Clint Zweifel said in the release. “We do this free of charge and faster than ever before because we know that an average return of $365 can help pay for home repairs, groceries, school supplies or filling up the tank.”

Both the amount returned and the number of reimbursed account holders beat records held in previous years. The $35 million returned amount beats the $34.5 million record set in fiscal year 2008, and the 92,000 account return number beats the previous 75,000 record set in fiscal 2009, according to the news release.

Citizens can search online to claim property to which they are entitled.
