The state legislature in New York passed a bill that would limit electricity used by cryptocurrency miners.
The legislation specifically would place a two-year moratorium on the use of fossil-fuel power plants to provide electricity for miners. Crypto mining relies on electricity to power computer systems, and the state of New York has a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2050.
Gov. Kathy Hochul had not yet decided whether to sign the bill on Monday.
