State issues third round of training funds

Posted online
General Electric Motors in Springfield is among a handful of Missouri companies receiving job training assistance through a $350,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

This is DED’s third statewide grant since July, bringing the state’s total job training assistance to about $6.3 million in fiscal year 2006.

GE Motors by the Regal Beloit Corp., 2401 E. Sunshine, will receive $34,500 to train 200 employees – more trainees than any other company receiving assistance. Employees at 19 new or existing Missouri companies will receive training to upgrade skills for their particular industries.

Other local companies receiving funds include:

• EFCO Corp. in Monett, $31,625 for 100 trainees;

• Leggett & Platt Branch One in Carthage, $34,500 for 150 trainees; and

• Graham Packaging Co. in Joplin, $20,125 for 40 trainees.

Funds are appropriated by the General Assembly to the Missouri Job Development Fund. The money is then administered through the state’s Customized Training Program.

“Missouri must stay highly competitive in today’s technologically advanced work place by ensuring our workers can advance their skills according to current business needs,” Blunt said in a news release. “The Customized Training Program helps Missouri businesses increase their productivity and competitiveness.”

Ozarks Technical Community College administers training programs for companies who received funds but do not have an on-site facility.
