State issues Springfield $2.5M tax check

Posted online
The Missouri Department of Revenue issued the city of Springfield a 1 percent general sales tax check of $2.5 million for August.

Reflecting sales processed by the state in July from transactions made largely in June, this month’s check represents a 5 percent boost compared to $2.4 million in August 2014, according to a news release.

The round of funding also compares favorably to the city’s $2.3 million projection for August.

For the first two months of the city’s fiscal year, the general sales tax has brought in roughly $7 million, a 1.2 percent increase from $6.9 million at the same time last year. Fiscal year-to-date funds also are 9 percent above the city’s projections, according to the release.

Sale tax revenues are the primary source of revenue for the city’s vital services, such as police and fire operations. Roughly 60 percent of Springfield’s general fund comes from sales and use taxes.
