State grant program preserves historic buildings

Posted online
Missouri has introduced a new grant program to help downtowns preserve their historic, publicly owned buildings.

The Missouri Heritage Properties Program will administer $500,000 in grants through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ State Historic Preservation Office. The program is supported by the Missouri Historic Preservation Revolving Fund, which is funded by the state’s nonresident athletes and entertainers tax.

“This new initiative introduces an innovative opportunity to use historic preservation funds to generate economic growth and investment in Missouri downtowns and historic buildings,” Gov. Matt Blunt said in a news release.

Initially, the program will focus on preserving historic courthouses. Missouri has 103 courthouses that are at least 50 years old, and half of those are more than 100 years old. The Greene County Courthouse is more than 50 years old and is nationally registered as historic. Polk and Lawrence counties have courthouses dating back more than 100 years. Future emphasis may be on city halls, municipal auditoriums or libraries, according to the release.

Buildings selected for the program will continue to be used for their historic purposes. Museum properties will not qualify.

Grant applications are available at www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo/index.html. They must be postmarked by Nov. 30.[[In-content Ad]]
