The Missouri Department of Revenue issued the city of Springfield a 1 percent sales tax check for June of $4.6 million, a nearly 13 percent increase compared to $4.08 million in the same month a year ago.
The check, reflecting sales processed by the state in May from transactions made largely in April, also was roughly 11 percent above the city’s June forecast of $4.15 million, according to a news release.
The latest sales tax check brings the city’s total for fiscal 2016 to $44.4 million. That’s up 5 percent compared to the same time last year and the city’s forecast.
Sales tax revenue funds core city services such as police and fire operations. In Springfield, roughly 60 percent of the city’s general fund revenue comes from sales and use taxes, according to the release.
