Construction of the center city state crime lab is on schedule for an October 2008 opening. General contractor Flintco Inc. began construction on the $5.9 million project in July. Design firms Creative Ink Architects and Buxton-Kubik-Dodd Inc. collaborated on the architectural work. The engineers are Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins Inc., mechanical, electrical and plumbing; Meridian Structural Works Inc., structural; and ESC Inc., civil. The project comprises 49,000 square feet on the first floor, 57,000 square feet on the second floor and 17,500 square feet on the third floor. Funding for the project comes from a lease-purchase agreement for the city-owned building, a federal grant and low-interest bonds backed by 14 Springfield-area banks.
