According to a DED news release, the money will be used to offset costs for cleaning up hazardous contaminants at the former Heer’s building, 138 Park Central Square.
The property is contaminated with asbestos, lead-based paint, pigeon droppings, ballasts and florescent tubes.
The Prost project is expected to create nearly 300 jobs once the former department store site is redeveloped into a mixed-use structure with restaurants, a catering and banquet business and office and retail space.
The property meets the under-utilization requirements of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program, and was accepted in December to the Department of Natural Resources Voluntary Cleanup Program.
