Starbucks to serve alcohol

Posted online
Leave the latte, toss the tea and jettison the juice because America's favorite coffeehouse plans to start serving alcohol.

Starbucks Corp.'s (Nasdaq: SBUX) after-4 p.m. evening menu will include bacon-wrapped dates, truffle mac n’ cheese, chocolate fondue and other wine bar-type fare paired with local vino favorites and beer.

The Washington Post reports Starbucks first tested the idea in 2010 at a Seattle store, then tried it in 25 other locations in Chicago, southern California and Atlanta starting in 2012 in a effort to boost revenue.

Springfield coffeehouses, such as downtown's Coffee Ethic, already offer an evening alcohol menu. The Post reports Starbucks plans to add the alcohol to "thousands of stores" in an extended nationwide rollout that "could take years."
