Starbucks, the company whose name has become synonymous with coffee, is hoping its customers can learn to sit and steep.
Beginning this past Thursday and continuing for the next five years, the Seattle-based coffee retailer plans to open 1,000 tea bars across the country, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Earlier this year, Starbucks purchased the 350-outlet tea company Teavana with plans to dip into the $90 billion global tea market.
Charlie Cain, Starbucks’ vice president of concept development, says the plan is to introduce coffee-swilling Americans to the “complex flavors of tea,” such as Cococaramel Sea Salt, Strawberry Lemonade and Yunnan Golden Pu-Erh. Teavana tea bars will not feature any Starbucks accoutrement, such as logos or signs.
