Starbucks drops Square app as mobile-payments battle intensifies

Starbucks and Square, one-time partners in mobile payments, are going their separate ways in the ongoing battle for how to order and pay for items using smartphones.

Starbucks is testing its own in-store payments app that would allow customers to preorder drinks before arriving, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Square's Wallet app stopped working at Starbucks stores last week, ahead of the company's plans to scrap the app early next year. It will instead focus on Square Order, a new app to let consumers place orders in advance of showing up at stores.
