St. Louis Rams draft Michael Sam

Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by a major professional sports team when the St. Louis Rams selected him in the NFL draft Saturday.

A defensive end who played for the University of Missouri, Sam was the co-defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference last season, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

He was picked in the seventh and final round, the 249th pick overall.
