St. Louis pharmacy school develops Springfield partners

Posted online
St. Louis College of Pharmacy has partnered with several Springfield hospitals and pharmacies to offer its students more options for experiential training in the Ozarks.

The St. Louis school hired A. Karl McFarland III, director of pharmacy at Doctors Hospital, as program coordinator for its Springfield expansion, according to a news release from the school.

The college’s 1,100 students now are able to complete their required practice rotations with partners CoxHealth, St. John’s Health System and Family Pharmacy.

McFarland also is working to establish relationships with other partners who would serve as sites for student rotations.

The college offers a six-year professional curriculum, leading to a doctor of pharmacy degree. In the sixth year, students must complete eight five-week practice rotations.

“With its commitment to quality health care, the Springfield area is a rich environment in which our students can learn,” college President Thomas F. Patton said in the release.

“A number of our students come from southwest Missouri and look forward to returning as professional pharmacists,” he added.
