St. Louis' iconic Millennium Hotel to close

Posted online
Reports in St. Louis say the downtown Millennium Hotel, with its spectacular views of the Arch and rotating top-floor restaurant, is scheduled to close Jan. 22.

Millennium Hotels and Resorts, part of London-based Millennium & Copthorne Hotels, said in a statement to St. Louis Business Journal, “We have concluded that the hotel, in its current state, does not meet our standards and has not kept pace with guest demands.”

Hotel operators already had closed 600 of the 780 rooms in March for a planned renovation to begin this fall.

An employee told KMOX it would take $80 million to upgrade the hotel. The News Radio cited an online review by a recent guest who said, “The hotel is horribly dated, very Beverly Hills, 90210. If a hotel ever needed a facelift, it was this one.”

A Chesterfield-based hotel analysts told the journal the hotel owner was seeking a buyer.

KMOX said its nearly 800 rooms represents a tenth of the downtown St. Louis hotel market. The hotel employs about 80.
