Springfield boasts two of the nation's best integrated health systems again this year, according to a new list.
St. John's Health System in Springfield was No. 3 on the 2010 list of Top 100 Integrated Delivery Networks compiled by national health care magazine Modern Healthcare, while CoxHealth ranked No. 60.
The magazine evaluates more than 580 networks each year in eight categories: overall level of integration, integrated technology, contractual capabilities, outpatient utilization, financial stability, services and access, hospital utilization and physicians.
This is the first time in 13 years that two of the top three health care networks are part of the same system; St. John's Mercy Health Care in St. Louis, also a member of the Sisters of Mercy system, was No. 2 on the list.
The magazine touted Mercy's implementation of its electronic health record system, achieving higher levels of patient safety, operational efficiency and cost savings.
"That kind of strategy - using the system's scale and internal knowledge base to increase efficiency while implementing an initiative to improve patient safety - was a major reason why the Sisters of Mercy system saw not one but two of its regional health systems finish in the elite top three," the magazine said.
St. John's in Springfield has been on the list for more than a decade and was No. 1 in 2007 and 2009.
CoxHealth was No. 49 on the 2009 list, the first time the health system cracked the top 50. CoxHealth officials said last year that the system's integration efforts have been ongoing for more than a decade.
"If you can bring up the level of care from the moment (the patients) enter the ambulance all the way through to when they're on the way home, you can improve people's lives," Chief Financial Officer Jake McWay told Springfield Business Journal in early 2009.
