Springfield-based SRC Holdings Corp. is one of the 100 largest employee-owned companies in the country, according to a new report from the National Center for Employee Ownership.
The list, called the Employee Ownership 100, ranks companies based on their number of workers. Companies must be at least 50% employee owned to qualify, through an employee stock ownership plan, worker cooperative or other another broad form of employee ownership.
SRC is No. 88 on the list, with 1,469 employees. The list notes that SRC is 100% employee owned.
"ESOPs of all industries and sizes have a long history of showing tangible benefits to both companies and employees while creating a viable model for business succession," SRC officials said in a news release announcing the company's placement on the list. "The latest data from the Department of Labor shows total contributions to ESOP accounts were more than $107 billion."
On Springfield Business Journal's 2024 list of the area's largest employers, SRC ranked No. 12.
On the Employee Ownership 100, Publix Super Markets is No. 1 with 260,000, followed by No. 2 WinCo Foods, at 20,000, and No. 3 Houchens Industries, at 15,000. Publix is not 100% owned by employees, according to the list.
