The city of Springfield won a Missouri Municipal League Innovation Award for its SGF Yields pedestrian safety program.
Springfield won its category of extra-large cities with a population of more than 30,000, according to a news release.
"There were 29 applications this year and eight in this category so there was some stiff competition," said Ramona Huckstep, policy and membership associate for MML, in the release.
Created by the city's Public Works and Public Information departments, SGF Yields is a multifaceted campaign that involves signage at various crosswalks, crosswalk compliance assessments by Public Works, driver yield checks by the Springfield Police Department and engineering modifications at some crosswalks.
The MML Innovation Award recognizes municipal projects for new approaches to solving problems, according to the release. The city of Nixa is a prior recipient for its 72-acre solar farm, according to past reporting.
SGF Yields was jump-started by a $5,000 Missouri Department of Transportation grant, according to its website.
MML's awards ceremony is scheduled Sept. 28 in St. Louis, according to the release.
Springfield event venue Belamour LLC gained new ownership; The Wok on West Bypass opened; and Hawk Barber & Shop closed on a business purchase that expanded its footprint to Ozark.
