Springfield unemployment drops

Preliminary findings from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics point to a Springfield metropolitan statistical area unemployment rate of 8.2 percent in September.

The findings compare to an 8.5 percent unemployment rate in August and an 8.8 percent unemployment rate in September 2009.

The state unemployment rate was down to 9 percent in September, compared to 9.4 percent in August and 9.5 percent in September of last year.

The report showed the Springfield MSA - which comprises Greene, Christian, Dallas, Polk and Webster counties - had 194,000 employees on nonfarm payrolls in September. In comparison, the statistical area had 189,700 employees on nonfarm payrolls in August and 191,800 in September 2009.

In Missouri, the September figure for employees on nonfarm payrolls was 2.7 million, relatively unchanged from August 2010 and September 2009.
