Seven tax assistance centers across the state, including an office in downtown Springfield, are closing due to Gov. Jay Nixon's budget cuts announced earlier this week.
The Missouri Department of Revenue-operated centers, which provide tax aid to individuals and businesses, will close at the end of business on June 30, DOR spokeswoman Michelle Gleba said. The
centers also issue retail sales tax licenses, among other services.
"This is one of the results of the budget cuts that were announced earlier this week," Gleba said, noting the centers would close permanently.
She said the 10 state employees at the Springfield office, 149 Park Central Square, would be laid off, as would 42 others employed at centers in Jefferson City, St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Joplin, Kansas City and St. Joseph.
"After July 1, taxpayers who have questions regarding any personal income tax issues they have are encouraged to contact our taxation division here at the Department of Revenue," Gleba said, noting the division could be reached by phone at (573) 751-3505 or by email at income@dor.mo.gov. "Businesses that have questions or need services regarding taxes are also encouraged to do the same thing."
Nixon announced his decision to withhold some $1 billion from the state's fiscal 2015 budget
on Tuesday. The move seeks to counter bills passed in the General Assembly the governor said would tip the state's budget into the red.[[In-content Ad]]
