Sequiota Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Jeannie Ratcliff was named Springfield Public Schools Teacher of the Year at the district’s annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet Monday night.

The banquet, held at University Plaza Convention Center, was put on by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools.

Ratcliff has taught fourth and fifth grades at York and Sequiota elementary schools since 2002.

“To receive this honor is just a dream come true,” Ratcliff said after the announcement, according to a district news release. “The kids make teaching fun. This is for them.”

The award qualifies Ratcliff as a candidate for the 2007-2008 Missouri Teacher of the Year award, given by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

With funding from Missouri State University, Ratcliff will receive $2,000, and Sequiota Elementary School will receive another $2,000.

New this year are awards given to the remaining finalists: Julia Armstrong, Pipkin Middle School; Michael Carr, Jeffries Elementary School; Rick Snyder, Kickapoo High School; and Jim Whytlaw, Glendale High School. With funding from St. John’s Hospital, each will receive $250, and another $250 will be given to each of their schools.[[In-content Ad]]
