The city of Springfield's fiscal 2020 sales tax revenue came in roughly flat compared with the prior year.
The city reported revenue of $46.6 million, a less than 1% increase compared with $46.4 million in fiscal 2019, according to a news release.
Though its fiscal year ends June 30, the city calculated sales tax checks received from the Missouri Department of Revenue from September 2019 through August 2020 because of a two-month lag in the collection process. For instance, the city's August check represented sales processed by the state in July for transactions made mostly in June.
While revenue from the 1% sales tax was up for the fiscal year, it was roughly 1.3% below city officials' projections, according to the release.
Springfield uses sales tax revenue from the Department of Revenue to fund the Police and Fire departments and other public services. Roughly 56% of the city’s general fund comes from sales and use taxes.
