Construction of a multimillion-dollar Pilot Flying J truck stop on West Chestnut Expressway is scheduled to start next month with a targeted opening this summer, according to a company spokesperson.
Brittany Norvell of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Pilot Travel Centers LLC said via email the design-build project currently is out for bid. She declined to disclose the project’s cost.
In September, Springfield City Council approved a use permit allowing a truck stop on 12 acres at 4901 and 4939 W. Chestnut Expressway for applicant Pilot Flying J. The city of Springfield received a project permit from the applicant on Dec. 31. Springfield Building Development Services Director Chris Straw said the estimated cost of the project listed on the filing is $6 million.
“Pilot Flying J builds new stores located strategically across the country to better serve our customers. That’s why the convenience of our customers is always a top priority,” Norvell said of the truck stop’s placement near Interstate 44. “We look forward to being part of the Springfield community and are excited to bring new jobs, convenience and annual sales tax revenue to the area.”
Planned features at the truck stop include six gasoline fueling stations, nine diesel and two recreational vehicle lanes, a Wendy’s restaurant, a joint Auntie Anne's and Cinnabon kiosk, a game room and lounge, and seven showers. The location also would carry such PJ Fresh products as salads and pizza, Norvell said.
Pilot Flying J claims to be the largest operator of travel centers and travel plazas in North America with more than 650 retail locations across the U.S. and Canada. The next closest location to Springfield is in Collins, according to its
website.
