According to a news release from the city of Springfield, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission is accepting nominations for the awards, which honor developments that demonstrate quality landscaping that beautifies the city of Springfield and enhances the community’s quality of life.
Nominations are not limited to sites that were landscaped during the past year and may include developments in which matured landscaping further illustrates the value of plantings.
Eligible sites must be within Springfield city limits, the release said. Individuals may submit multiple nominations, which are available in seven categories:
• Major improvement or rehabilitation of an existing site: This category addresses conversion or redevelopment of an existing site, such as Ozarks Technical Community College or Dodson-Williams Collision Center, both previous Landscape Award winners.
• Retail establishment or general: This category includes overall development of a retail site. Sites such as The French Quarter and Primrose Market Place have been nominated in the past.
• Manufacturing or office establishment: This category includes overall development of a manufacturing or office establishment. Kensington Place Office Condominiums was the 2004 winner.
• Residential subdivision/neighborhood or mixed-use developments: This category looks at landscaping interspersed throughout a subdivision and either under common ownership or owned by the general developer, and planned developments. An example of a past winner is Millwood subdivision.
• Residence - single family: This category recognizes landscaping of single-family residences that can be seen from the street. David and Harriet Fesperman, 2355 E. Galloway St., are past winners.
• Public properties: This category includes publicly owned properties
and grounds. An example of a past winner is St. John’s Surgery Center, 1229 E. Seminole St.
• Special recognition certificate: This category covers those properties that may not easily fit another category or may have been nominated and, although not a winner, nonetheless deserve recognition for effort. There were two winners in 2004: Ralph and Helen Roesslet, 513 E. Morningside St., and the traffic streetscape between Benton and Sherman avenues.
Additionally, nominations to recognize volunteerism are available with site nominations. Forms are available online at www.springfieldmogov.org/landscape
