All of the state of Missouri's metropolitan areas measured by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded monthly unemployment rate increases in June.
The Springfield MSA – which comprises Greene, Christian, Dallas, Polk and Webster counties – had a June unemployment rate of 4.2%, which was up from 3.7% in May, according to a news release.
The state's metro areas, by June unemployment rate, are as follows:
• Jefferson City, 3.7%, up from 3.2% in May
• St. Louis, 4.1%, up from 3.7%
• Columbia, 4.2%, up from 3.5%
• Kansas City, 4.2%, up from 3.8%
• Springfield, 4.2%, up from 3.7%
• Cape Girardeau, 4.3%, up from 3.7%
• Joplin, 4.4%, up from 3.8%
• St. Joseph, 4.5%, up from 4%
Missouri's June unemployment rate was 4.4%, up from 3.9% in May. The BLS data is not seasonally adjusted.
Compared with a year prior, June's unemployment rates were higher in 217 of the 387 metro areas measured nationwide by the BLS, lower in 147 and unchanged in 23. The Springfield MSA's June 2024 unemployment rate was 3.7%.

Remember that June unemployment always has high school and recent college grads out looking for jobs. Shades of the year I graduated from college I had 4 jobs in 1 year w/ a degree in journalism. 3 of those businesses went out of business. So even when I had a job, pooey . It went out of business.
