Springfield metro area GDP grows 1.7% in 2013

The Springfield metropolitan statistical area gross domestic product grew 1.7 percent to $16.7 billion in 2013, up from $16.4 billion in the previous year.

The Springfield MSA - which comprises Greene, Christian, Dallas, Polk and Webster counties - ranked 130th among the nation's 381 metropolitan areas in terms of 2013 GDP, according to a U.S. Department of Commerce news release issued yesterday.

Among the metro areas nationwide, 292 improved in terms of GDP in 2013, led by growth in finance, insurance, real estate, rent, leasing, nondurable goods manufacturing, and professional and business services.

On average, the GDP for U.S. metro areas increased 1.7 percent in 2013 after rising 2.6 percent in 2012, according to the release.
