Springfield-based not-for-profit Alternative Opportunities Inc. has been awarded a contract to operate one of the city's two state motor vehicle license offices.
The organization will operate the office at 3061 S. Fremont Ave., which was previously run by Leslie Carter. The office had an estimated 207,732 transactions in fiscal 2008 and generated an estimated $644,711 in processing fees.
The office received three bids, according to a Missouri Department of Revenue news release.
Alternative Opportunities provides career training, services for people with disabilities and help for families in crisis, according to its Web site. The organization serves all of southern Missouri and areas of Oklahoma and Arkansas.
All of Missouri's 183 license offices are being put out for bid under Gov. Jay Nixon's direction. Three others so far have been awarded - in Mexico, Hannibal and Moberly, according to the release.
Operators of the four offices awarded all have agreed to return some of their profits to the state, the release said. The state estimates it will receive $47,918 annually from the four offices combined.
Springfield's second license office - at 1534 S. Glenstone Ave. - was put out for bids in February. The current operator is State Financial Inc. owner Ben Newhouse.[[In-content Ad]]
