Springfield kids to receive new books

Posted online
A Junior League literacy program has plans to distribute about 3,000 books to Springfield children by Nov. 1, beginning tomorrow at a reading by Missouri First Lady Melanie Blunt.

At 1 p.m., Blunt will visit Grant Head Start, 1051 S. Grant, and read to a classroom of about 20 preschool-aged children. She will be accompanied by her husband, Gov. Matt Blunt, and son, William Branch Blunt.

The Junior League of Springfield will hand out bags that contain at least six children’s books and information about National Family Literacy Day.

“Our goal is to get more books in their hands, so they can go home with Mom and Dad and have more opportunities to spend time together as a family and read and open up a whole new aspect,” said Ashley DeWitt, the program chair.

The Junior League will distribute the remaining books to about 800 children in about10 Head Start classrooms on Nov. 1, DeWitt said.

The league was able to purchase the books after it raised about $6,800, with the help of Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation, Springfield Greene County Library District and Ozarks Literacy Council.

Head Start is a preschool learning opportunity offered by Ozarks Area Community Action Corporation for children from income-eligible families.
