Springfield Ear, Nose, Throat and Facial Plastic Surgery begins construction

Posted online

With an eye toward the future, Dr. David Randall of Springfield Ear, Nose, Throat and Facial Plastic Surgery is having his own two-story facility built.

Randall broke ground July 7 on his new location at 3555 S. Culpepper Circle.

Randall and his wife, Dr. Shelly Randall, purchased the land as Bacchus Associates. Randall calls the purchase an investment.

"If you're going to be in a space for 20 to 25 years, you would rather be paying rent to yourself," David Randall said. Randall will move to the new location from his current offices at 3648 S. Campbell. "Ultimately, I'd like to have three or four people in the group, and I just needed something that would accommodate that."

The two-story building will have 8,000 square feet per level. Randall's plans for expansion include an audiology lab and facial plastic surgery suite, as well as leased space on the first floor. The project is expected to cost $2.5 million and is scheduled for completion May 1, 2004.

Randall hopes to attract tenants who are also in the medical profession.

"We would really like to have other physicians or maybe a dentist; I think it will tie together better," Randall said. " I think it will appeal to tenants for a couple of reasons, it will be an attractive building, each of the four (lease) spaces will have their own entrance, and parking will go around 270 degrees. Also, in terms of other health care facilities, it's close (to those on medical mile)."

Challenges

Part of the challenge of working on this project for Bill Woody and Bill Guilliams, of Marshall Waters Woody and Associates, was to create a structure that was compatible with the surrounding architecture.

"We wanted it to stand the test of time, of changing attitudes towards design, and the architecture needed to fit in with the development that's already out there (on medical mile). We picked up some of those features, but it has its own style, too," Woody said.

Those involved with the project also had to deal with the challenge of planning for Randall's future growth.

"It was all done to be pretty flexible, knowing how his practice was going to be changing and expanding," Woody said.

These changes necessitated Randall's involvement in the design process, an aspect welcomed by Morelock-Ross Builders, general contractor for the project.

"It's right in line with what we are good at," said Dianne Rankin, project supervisor.

Randall believes his extended practice will allow him to provide better service to his patients. Those seeking audiological care must travel to another facility to receive an audiogram, an inconvenience that will be eliminated at the new facility. Having a separate facial plastic surgery suite will better suit that segment of his clientele as well.

"It offers a nicer environment and helps protect the confidentiality of clients coming in for cosmetic issues," said Randall. Having on-site facilities for these services also will allow Randall to curb patients' costs, he said.

Meanwhile, Randall looks forward to moving into his new building next May.

"It will be a more pleasant place," he said. "It will allow us the room to give better service all around."
