Springfield Contemporary Theatre Inc., which was set to begin its 30th season this fall, has closed for "the foreseeable future," officials said on Friday.
In a Facebook post and letter to supporters, the SCT Board of Directors released a statement calling the move "a necessary and indefinite pause."
"While we are effectively closing the company at this time, we are keeping the door open for future opportunities – should the right moment and resources arise to bring SCT back to life in a new form," the board statement reads. "The decision to pause comes after facing ongoing challenges that have made it increasingly difficult to sustain operations. Despite the passion and dedication of our staff, artists and supporters, the realities of funding, audience shifts and organizational capacity have led us to this moment."
In an FAQ posted to SLT's website, officials with the nonprofit theater organization said "it’s possible SCT could return in a new form" but that there's "no timeline or active plan in place at this moment."
The closure announcement came two days after SCT announced its 30th anniversary season programming that had been scheduled to start with the Sept. 25-Oct. 12 production of "Hairspray." The 30th season had been slated to run through June 2026.
“At the time of the announcement, we were moving forward and intended to produce the season. The decision to cancel the season was not taken lightly, and we share your disappointment,” SCT officials said in the website FAQ.
SCT's primary venue has been the downtown Fox Theatre since 2023, according to past reporting.
SCT was founded by local theater figure Louis H. Schaeffer in 1995, according to the board statement.
