Springfield Catholic schools get FluMist vaccine

Posted online
For some Springfield students, getting protection for flu season was easier this year.

St. John’s nurses were on-site at Spring-field Catholic elementary schools Sept. 26–28 to administer FluMist intranasal flu vaccine to students.

FluMist, which is recommended for healthy children older than 5 years, was offered for students at Immaculate Conception, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Joseph schools for a discounted rate of $25.

“One of the barriers to flu immunization is that you have to go somewhere to get the vaccine,” said Dr. Robert Steele, St. John’s Clinic pediatrician, in a news release.

Springfield Catholic Schools officials are hopeful that vaccination efforts will positively affect the health of students and their families as flu season approaches.

“Small children are pretty good carriers, so if we can keep them healthy, hopefully we can keep aunts, uncles and families healthy, too,” said Bev Talty, nurse with Springfield Catholic Schools, in the release.

Information packets about FluMist and consent forms were sent home with students, and Talty said about 250 parents expressed interest in the vaccinations.[[In-content Ad]]
