The Springfield Cardinals last night capped off a record season with the team's first Texas League Championship Series win since 2012.
The Cardinals defeated the Midland RockHounds at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas, according to MLB.com. The final game, with a 13-1 win by the Cardinals, wrapped up a best-of-three series.
The 10-team Texas League is one of three in Double-A baseball, along with the Eastern League and the Southern League, and each has a championship series. The Cardinals, the Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, picked up a franchise record of 88 wins during the season.
The city of Springfield in 2023 purchased Hammons Field, home of the Springfield Cardinals, according to past reporting. Through the purchase agreement, the city agreed to pay $6.5 million for the ballpark and $5.5 million for two nearby parking lots, with $4 million slated for repairs to the park.
"The city’s purchase of Hammons Field ensured that victories like this would continue to happen for Springfield generations to celebrate," Springfield City Manager David Cameron said in a news release. "This victory is about more than baseball – it’s about Springfield’s spirit and our belief in investing in the future."
