Springfield Brewing Co. and sister company Ty Iechyd Da Distillery are expanding with a new concept on Commercial Street.
A late fall opening is planned for the concept called Mumbles1888, according to a news release. The venture, a soccer-themed pub and taproom, will be located at 504 E. Commercial St., the former home of Ruthie's. The latter business reopened at 1611 N. Campbell Ave. in late 2024 after announcing in late 2023 that its lease would not be renewed.
Neil Chanter, co-owner of SBC and Ty Iechyd Da, said via email this morning that the roughly 1,800-square-foot space for Mumbles1888 is being leased from Winged Foot Investments LLC for undisclosed terms. He also declined to estimate the expected investment in the venture.
Mumbles1888, which in the release is referred to as "Springfield’s football pub/taproom," would feature SBC beers and Ty Iechyd Da spirits. Sports will be shown to customers, and the owners emphasize that no food is planned to be served.
"There is already an awesome selection of eateries on C-Street, and we hope our customers visit them all. But what C-Street doesn’t currently have is a taproom, and the intent is to deliver that as soon as we can," Chanter said in the release.
The name Mumbles1888 has multiple origins, the organizers say. Mumbles is the name of a small village on the south Wales coastline, near Swansea, and 1888 was the first year that the 504 E. Commercial building was first occupied and open for business. The year 1888 also is the first one for the English Football League, as well as the year the British and Irish Lions of rugby toured the southern hemisphere, according to the release.
It's the latest expansion for SBC, which in January opened Mile 6 Taproom in Willard and last year launched One 2 Five Taproom in Rogersville.
