Springfield Assemblies of God schools to merge

Posted online
The Assemblies of God General Council voted yesterday to merge Evangel University, Central Bible College and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.

At a conference held in Phoenix, 1,138 votes, or 74.7 percent, were cast in favor of the merger, while 446 votes, or 25.3 percent, were against the measure. A simple majority was needed to pass the plan, according to a news release from the general council.

The passage of the proposal would merge all three Springfield schools into one institution known as Evangel University.

Classes under the consolidated Evangel University are set to begin September 2013, but the full extent of the merger is expected to be completed by 2020.

The consolidated university would operate five schools of study: the School of Theological and Church Ministries; the School of Arts and Sciences; the School of Behavioral Science and Education; the School of Business and Communication; and the School of Fine Arts. Evangel, which has a current enrollment of more than 2,000 students, would approach 3,000 with the completion of the merger, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
