Two new direct flights are starting at Springfield-Branson National Airport.

The first nonstop flight to Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Allegiant Travel Co. (Nasdaq: ALGT) was May 22, and the first direct flight to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on American Airlines Group Inc. (Nasdaq: AAL) is scheduled for May 23.

According to the airport, the seasonal service to Gulf Shores will have two flights a week, Mondays and Fridays, starting this week. It is expected to run through November.

“We know that Gulf Shores is a very popular destination for southwest Missouri,” said Brian Weiler, director of aviation, in a news release. “This coastal region is a beloved leisure destination for families in our community, and the initial success of the route proves that. We are excited and hope its success will continue as people discover how easy it is to fly direct to Gulf Shores from the Ozarks.”

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a major hub of American Airlines, the largest carrier for SGF. This seasonal, Saturday-only flight will connect the Springfield area with Phoenix Sky Habor, which offers nonstop service to more than 110 domestic and international spots.

Dave Schaumburg, assistant director of aviation, operations and maintenance, said American Airlines has provided service at the Springfield airport for 60 years.

“We are grateful for the airline’s continued investment in providing the air service needs of southwest Missouri,” he said in the release.
