Springfield added 3,300 of those jobs in September, and the city’s unemployment rate was 3.6 percent, up from 3.4 percent in August but a drop from 4.7 percent in August last year.
Springfield’s gains included 1,600 new jobs in local government, 1,300 in state government and 500 jobs in private educational services.
In Joplin, 1,800 jobs were added in September, though the city’s employment has changed little since the beginning of the year.
Joplin’s unemployment rate for the month was 4.1 percent, the same as in August, but down from 5.1 percent in July.
More than 38,000 jobs have been added in Missouri this year.
