Special Olympics Missouri picks Springfield as host site

Special Olympics Missouri has selected Springfield to serve as host for the next three years, and local officials are projecting a multimillion-dollar economic impact as a result.

The Springfield Sports Commission secured the Special Olympics Missouri State Outdoor Games for 2025-27, according to a news release. The Killian Softball Complex, Cooper Tennis Complex and Lake Country Soccer are among venues that will host the events that are scheduled for the third weekend of October each year.

The State Outdoor Games previously were held in Jefferson City since 2018, said Zach Paul, marketing and communications director for Special Olympics Missouri. He said Springfield was a finalist with Jefferson City and Cape Girardeau as the next host city.

The State Outdoor Games are expected to generate over $1 million annually in economic impact, or more than $3 million over the three-year contract, according to the release.

"This will bring a significant economic boom to our community, drawing athletes, families and spectators from all across the entire state of Missouri for the next three years. This influx boosts local businesses, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and transportation services,” said Stan Adams, director of sports business development for the Springfield Sports Commission, in the release. "Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the event highlights the long-term value of inclusivity, showcasing how supporting opportunities for individuals of all abilities contributes to stronger, more vibrant local economies."

A separate release from Special Olympics Missouri indicates more than 1,000 athletes, coaches and partners are expected to participate in the Oct. 17-19 event this year. Bocce, softball, tennis, golf and flag football are among the featured sports.

Through Special Olympics Missouri, children and adults with intellectual disabilities compete in 13 Olympic-type sports.
