A local poultry plant that closed last month is still under investigation.
Simmons Foods of Southwest City closed voluntarily late last month after a fish kill was discovered in a nearby stream.
The Department of Natural Resources came in to investigate and found wastewater treatment problems within the plant Feb. 22.
While the plant is still processing chickens, the DNR has put a stop to sewage treatment until the problem can be fixed. For now, sewage will be transported by tanker to nearby treatment facilities.
An average 1 million gallons of treated wastewater is discharged a day.
Doug Siemens, a company spokesman, said the company is looking for ways to solve the problem as quickly as possible.
The DNR said it is planning to set up a field office for Joplin and Neosho in an effort to better monitor poultry plant operations in the area.
