A local poultry processing plant has been fined for contamination.

Simmons Foods Inc. has agreed to pay $500,000 in penalties and costs for environmental violations that fall under the Missouri Clean Water Law.

Under a new mandate by Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, the company must now comply with limitations on how much waste it discharges, as well as reducing the amount of chicken litter spread on area farms.

This order comes after one of the plant's older pipes ruptured, sending partially treated wastewater into the Cave Springs Branch in October of this year.

Out of the agreed $500,000, the company will pay $443,000 to the McDonald County School Fund and $57,000 to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to defray costs of the investigation.
