St. John's Regional Medical Center welcomed its first baby of 1998 at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1.

Brookelynn Mae Freed, the daughter of Brandon and Stephanie Freed, weighed 7 pounds and 3/4 ounces. St. John's presented the family with a "Safety Packet," comprising safety items such as a fire extinguisher, outlet covers, drapery cord ties, cabinet latches, a bathtub spout cover, rechargeable flashlight, smoke alarm and electrical cord tie-ups.

St. John's Auxiliary donated a Teddy bear wearing a T-shirt with the statement "I was born at St. John's" on it. The hospital donated diapers, formula and a variety of grooming items for the newborn. These items were all put into a car seat, which the family also received.
