The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce has named Terry Wachter Outstanding Citizen for 1998.

The announcement was made at the Chamber's annual banquet April 16 at the Hammons Trade Center.

Wachter, vice president of mission and mercy at St. John's Regional Medical Center, was honored for her years of leadership and service to the citizens of the Joplin community.

She was chairman of the board of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce 1993-94 and has been a part of a majority of chamber projects since then.

Wachter has served on the United Way of Joplin board as president and campaign chairman, and was the United Way's outstanding volunteer in 1993.

Wachter was recognized primarily for her work with Vision Joplin's vision health program.

From this program came the Joplin Community Free Clinic and the City of Joplin Free Clinic, as well as Operation Community Health.

Wachter was also recognized for her support of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Joplin Community Concerts, Missouri Southern's International Piano Competition, Joplin Little Theater and Soroptimist International.

Robert Lee, past chairman of the board, presented the award.
