The Lafayette House of Joplin, at 18th Street and Jackson Avenue, was organized in 1978 to provide shelter and care to battered and abused women in the area.
In the past 20 years, the shelter has served thousands of women and their families from 21 counties in Missouri.

The first southwest Missouri location of EarthWise Pet, a national chain of pet supply stores, opened; Grey Oak Investments LLC relocated; and Hot Bowl by Everyday Thai LLC got its start.
