Steve's IGA becomes J-Town sports bar

The former Steve's IGA, Joplin, has undergone a complete remodeling and now is racking up business as J-Town - Billiards, Sports Bar and Grill.

"It's an entertainment center with a sports bar," says Patty Huffman, co-owner of the family-oriented business. The 17,000-square-foot center opened April 1.

With 26 pool tables, a row of dart boards, shuffleboard and 10-foot television screen, the owners said that J-Town is one of the largest entertainment centers in the area.

Patty and Frank Huffman's son, Chad, came up with the idea of buying the former grocery store building. Chad's wife, Shelly Huffman, handles the grill and hiring. Chad Huffman takes care of the business end while Frank Huffman oversees the entire operation.

"We each have our talents, and they mesh perfectly," said Patty Huffman, who did the interior decorating. "We want this to be a fun place to come home to when people come in from out of town. We also want it to be a fun place to hang out after work."

Flower Box City program in bloom again

Neosho's Flower Box City program, which took root in the 1950s, is blooming again.

The chamber of commerce is taking orders from businesses and residents for 2-foot-long cedar flower boxes.

The boxes will be planted and delivered by May 22. The chamber suggests a sunny exposure for the boxes so flowers will flourish throughout the growing season.

Unplanted boxes are also available for people who wish to do their own planting.

Order forms are available at the chamber office. For more information, call 451-1925.

Chamber gains 67 members in four hours

Three teams of Nixa Area Chamber of Commerce volunteers brought in 57 new memberships via a recent telemarketing blitz. "It was a phenomenal success," said Larry Perney, executive director of the chamber.

"The Chamber now has its largest membership ever with 255 members," he added. Membership Development Chairman Jami Dressler, of Manpower Inc., was a member of the top-producing team, which also comprised Steve Vaught, Keith Roberts, John Fugitt and Jennie Haymes.
