The Joplin Metropolitan Statistical Area recently ranked lowest in a cost-of-living index survey of 200 metropolitan areas throughout the United States. The quarterly survey is conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association in Washington, D.C. The group's cost-of-living index measures relative price levels for consumer goods and services in participating metropolitan areas. In the fourth quarter 1998, the overall cost of living in Joplin was 86.7 percent of the national average. Joplin rated 88.6 percent of the national average on groceries
