The Joplin Family Y is getting ready to expand. March 16 the organization held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the site of its new location, 510 Wall Ave.

The Y began its "Building a Strong Foundation" campaign last year. Freeman Health Systems of Joplin donated

$1.5 million toward the $3.8 million campaign.

The other $2.3 million was raised through private donations.

More than 400 residents of the community volunteered their time and money. The new facility will house a youth and family gymnasium, a 25-meter recreational pool, an indoor track and a nursery.

A cardiovascular center, fitness area and a multipurpose room will also be part of the new building.

The existing Family Y at will continue to operate in the meantime.

The Joplin Family Y has more than 500 members and offers more than 100 programs to the community each year.
