South Korea fines Qualcomm $865M

South Korea's antitrust regulator has fined Qualcomm Inc. $865 million for allegedly violating competition laws.

The country's Fair Trade Commission on Wednesday accused the San Diego company of using its dominant position in the modem chip market to force handset makers to pay license fees for a broad set of patents under terms it set unilaterally and to coerce handset makers into signing licensing contracts.

The fine on Qualcomm is the largest ever ordered by the Fair Trade Commission. Qualcomm plans to appeal the decision.
