The hack at Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. reached further than first reported and includes the Social Security numbers of 47,000 current and former employees, along with actors such as Sylvester Stallone, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The hack was posted by a group calling itself Guardians of Peace. In a review of the 33,000 documents by data-security consulting firm Identity Finder LLC, personal information, including salaries and home addresses, was posted for Sony Pictures workers, including freelancers. Among them were “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” director Judd Apatow and Australian actress Rebel Wilson, according to the journal. Much of the data analyzed by Identity Finder was stored in Microsoft Excel files without password protection.
Investigators say the hackers used methods similar to those discovered in South Korea, and the malware was made on a machine with Korean language settings.
Wall Street Journal reports that Sony Pictures executives have called the document heist and their subsequent release online “malicious criminal acts.” The studio is offering one year of free credit monitoring and fraud protection to current and former employees.
